Chris Lake Interview
Just recently we had the chance to catch up with one of the hottest DJ/Producers around, at this year’s Groove Cruise. We had a chance to ask Chris Lake a few questions so we can all get to know him better.
Q. So What Did you Think ABout The Groove Cruise
A. What a crazy weekend! It was great to see so many people on a boat SOOO EXCITED to go wild, have fun, and rock out to some house music. My biggest achievement though was being on a boat for 3 days and not throwing up. A first for me.
Q. What was your favorite event from last year?
A. Oh I don’t know, there were some great events so it’s difficult to just pin it down to one. It may sound like a cop out answer, but it’s true. 2011 was an unbelievable year to be a touring DJ in my opinion.
Q. Whats’ new for 2012?
A. Well I have an album coming out on Ultra Records which is very exciting. It’ll feature collaborations with artists like Tommy Trash, Lazy Rich, Nom De Strip, Hot Mouth, along with some vocals off some unbelievably talented new singers. I can’t wait for you all to hear it.
Q. Which was your favorite production from 2011?
A. From last year? I was really happy with ‘Secrets in the Dark’. It was a very simple and delicate track, but it worked a treat, and was something people weren’t expecting from me.
Q. What type of gear and software are you using nowadays?
A. Well for the past year my studio has really been all in my laptop, as I’ve been having to get so much done on the road, then when I get back to my studio, I plug it into my speakers and keep working. It can be frustrating sometimes as my laptop isn’t quite powerful enough to handle everything I throw at it, but at the same time, I do have everything I need in here to complete tracks, so I can’t complain.
Q. What’s your favorite piece of studio gear?
A. Hmmmm. I bought a pair of Genelec 8260A’s last year for my London studio. They’re ridiculously big, powerful and detailed, and I love them. An indulgence? Yes, but worth it? Definitely!
Q. What was your favorite record to remix?
A. I loved remixing Mark Ronson ft Lily Allen a few years ago. That was a lot of fun, and probably my favourite remix I ever made.
Q. What do you like to do on your downtime when traveling?
A. I watch a lot of box sets. I literally vegetate in my hotel room, ordering food, and watching shows. It’s a pathetic existence really! I occasionally venture out of my room and go wander around for somewhere interesting to eat. I’ve been on this health kick for the past few months, so I like going to seek out healthy places to get food. I found a brilliant Jamaican restaurant that didn’t look particularly inviting from the outside in Worcester, MA the other week, but tried it anyway and the food was UNBELIEVABLE! It was called Belmont Vegetarian Restaurant. Very cool.
Q. what type of movies do you like to watch?
A. Thrillers, Comedies, foreign films. Hollywood movies have become very very shit over the past few years for me overall. Of course, some great films come along every now and then, but overall I think most of them are bland, predictable rehashed tripe. Some great films coming out of Europe and Brazil right now.
Q. In all your Travels what is the one place you haven’t played at and would like to?
A. You know I’ve barely played in Asia. I need to spend more time there as it’s a fascinating continent. So much to see and learn there.
Q. Who is the most inspirational person to you? and why?
A. My Wife. She’s the most positive person you’ll ever meet, and inspires everyone around her.
He is not kidding. She is super cool! You can listen to her beautiful voice on both of his recent tracks, Sundown & Build Up.
