This is Ultra!
Around the world, there’s no city like Miami in March, a city that exudes 70s art-deco realness blended with contemporary influences. At the end of March, Miami is hit hard with a splash of day-glo and neon bright colors as Spring Break revelers and electronic music enthusiasts descend upon Miami from all parts of the globe to attend the mega-popular Ultra Music Festival.I obtained a pass to Ultra Music Festival courtesy of the sweet guys and gals at Whet Magazine. I was beyond excited to experience Ultra for the first time, especially after all the amazing things I’ve heard and seen.
Countless scores of people were gushing about having Ultra back at Bayfront Park. In fact, with a record breaking crowd of 210,000 attendees, there was virtually no congestion between stages, a rare feat when it comes to music festivals. From what we kept hearing the layout of the festival and the production were finally on point! Of course, the talent at this year’s Ultra was the real winner for me and my friends!
Here’s the recap:
Friday night brought out the big hitters, DJ Ti√ ́sto closed down the MAIN Stage with a high-energy headlining set, but it was Pretty Lights who rocked out the LIVE Stage with a laser light show that truly stole Friday night. However, it wasn’t all about the Friday night lights. Kraftwerk played a rare festival appearance utilizing their signature robot-like synthpop between four keyboards against a surrealistic video backdrop. Even the newly reunited members of New Order, an 80s electro-rock/synth-pop band, played a slot at Ultra.
Saturday was my favorite of the weekend. DJs 12th Planet and Skrillex played the heaviest, grimiest dubstep they could muster in 75 minutes. Even after all that noise the crowd was still begging for more. Big props also go to Laidback Luke, who cleverly added Rihanna, The White Stripes and a Jay-Z/Kanye West “Paris” encore into a hit-heavy set list. While the likes of Fatboy Slim & Justice blew my mind they were a great addition to Ultra. They gave UMF it’s west coast flavor for the weekend which was what rocked my world!
Sunday had the largest of crowds even after the exhausting weekend. Some of the standout acts were Kaskade, AVICII – Who had the queen of Pop Madonna (asking for Molly) join him for his set & of course Armin van Buuren. Nothing rocked my world more that day than Aforjacks set. Even Paris Hilton was spotted in VIP with Lil Jon and Aoki cheering on her “Boyfriend”!
Next year will mark the 15th Edition of Ultra Music Festival and it shows no signs of slowing down.
